Getting around the city is simple and easy. The central city area is so compact you can walk almost anywhere within 15-20 minutes from our venues. However, when you do need to use transport, taxis, buses and trains are all easily accessible and run regularly.
Stepping out
Getting around Wellington on foot is the easiest way of getting from A to B. With the central business district no longer than 5 kms from end to end and the widest point only 1.5kms with all the major hotels, shops and restuarants located in this busy central area .... using your feet is easy and simple and there is lots to see between destinations.
Catch the train
Wellington Train Station is located on Bunny Street. From the station it is a 5-10 minute walk to the TSB Bank Arena, a 15-20 minute walk to the Michael Fowler Centre, the Wellington Town Hall and Opera House, and 20-25 minutes to St James Theatre. Wellington Railway Station is the southern terminus of New Zealand's North Island main trunk railway, Wairarapa Line and Johnsonville Line.
Hop on a bus
Wellington has an extensive network of bus routes. The nearest stop to the Michael Fowler Centre and the Wellington Town Hall buildings is situated on Wakefield Street. St James Theatre has a stop directly outside the main entrance and the Opera House has a selection of bus stops either way - you will be there under a minute! Any stop on the Lambton Quay bus route and a short walk will take you to the TSB Bank Arena located at Queens Wharf on Jervois Quay.
The Stagecoach Flyer bus will take you between the airport and downtown Wellington and north through to the Hutt Valley. The Stagecoach flyer can best be located at Cuba Street.
Hail a taxi
Taxis are reasonably priced and plentiful in Wellington. A dedicated taxi rank is located outside all venues, and drivers are very familiar with the Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington Town Hall, TSB Bank Arena, St James Theatre and the Opera House. Taxis to and from the Wellington Airport to the central business district on average should cost no more than $25.
