The Opera House

History and heritage are words that are synonymous with the Opera House - an architectural icon providing conference, dining and performance options with a difference.

The historic Opera House is a masterpiece of early 1900s architecture.  Originally known as the Grand Opera House, it proudly opened its doors on Easter Saturday in 1914 and has been a much-loved social and entertainment venue for successive generations in Wellington.

At the time of construction, it was one of the largest proscenium arch theatres of its kind in Australasia. It features an impressive stage - bigger than the Sydney Opera house and even London's West End has only two stages that are larger.  It also boasts a lavishly decorated public room and auditorium with a domed ceiling, circle, marble staircase and grand circle together with two tiers of boxes.

Since 2001, the theatre auditorium and foyers have been refurbished and the ground and first floors given new seats. Backstage, a manual counterweight flying system with 87 lines was installed in 2005.

It has earned a reputation for providing outstanding performances, having housed a variety of events including opera, drama, public meetings, concerts and ballets.
