St James Theatre

Positively Wellington Venues is excited to manage the St James Theatre - the jewel in the crown of Wellington's flourishing theatre scene.

Performing arts

This stunning historic building, located in the heart of New Zealand’s ‘Capital of Cool’ is the ideal performance space for dance, opera, and musicals.

Since its extensive restoration in the late 1990s, the St James provides a permanent home for The Royal New Zealand Ballet, offering the best stage for dance in the country. The refurbished auditorium and back of house facility is of an international standard and the front of house boasts an impressive new entrance foyer leading to generous hospitality spaces on the first floor, enhancing the theatre experience for the public, sponsors and patrons.

The Jimmy”, a street level cafe and bar, opens all day and into the evening, adding to the vibrancy of Wellington's Courtenay Place theatre precinct.

Through its diverse programming and partnerships with local and international tour promoters, the St James Theatre has become a strong focus for the performing arts, both in the community and within this country.

Conference and dining

The rejuvenated St James Theatre not only provides for the performing arts community but has grown to become a thriving conference and events venue.   With multiple spaces, and a fabulous location, it offers a unique functions and meetings environment.  Dining on stage has proved to be a popular choice for many looking for that ‘wow’ factor.

The theatre comfortably seats 1550, has space for a cocktail function of 500 and hospitality areas for banquets of up to 400.
